Rule Properties - Open Files

Copy file when source file is open

If this option is checked, SureSync will still copy a file even if the source is open. If the box is not checked, when a source file is open it will not be copied and a warning will be written to the log to notify the user that the file was skipped. This option has no effect if the destination file is open.

Use Advanced Open File Support

Checking the 'Use Advanced Open File Support' option will enable the use of VSS. VSS stands for Volume Shadow Services which is a service included in Windows to copy files which are held open exclusively or locked. For example, this option would be used to copy Outlook PST files when they are open.
If you are copying locked open files from remote machines (not the machine where SureSync is installed) then a SPIAgent license is needed for each machine involved in the synchronization. VSS requires the use of local drive letters and does not support UNC paths. The SPIAgent allows you to reference paths on remote machines using a local drive letter on that remote machine. This allows you to easily copy open locked files from remote machines.

Allow user access to the source file being copied

Please note that there is a multi-second performance hit per file copy using this option so it should only be used in instances where this functionality is absolutely required.
When SureSync copies a file the source file is locked during the time the file copy is being performed. When using AOFS you can check the 'Allow user access to source file being copied' and users will be able to access the source file while the copy is being performed.

Disconnect users from open destination files

This option allows users with administrative privileges to disconnect users from an open destination file so the file can be copied. Depending on the type of file, this option may cause any of the user's changes to be lost. This is a useful option when the synchronization is run in the middle of the night and network users have left files open when they left for the day; once the user no longer has the file open it can be synchronized. This option will only work for Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows 2003, Windows XP or NetWare servers.

The disconnect users from open destination files option will only disconnect users who are connected to the files through a network share. In other words, if you look in the Open Files section of the Computer Management MMC console and the file appears as open then the user can be disconnected. If the user has the file(s) open locally on the machine there is not a mechanism to disconnect those users. For example, this might be an issue if you launch a program on the local machine which opens files. Those open files cannot be disconnected with this option. You could write a script or batch file which issues commands to terminate applications like this and set that script to run at the beginning of a Schedule on the Scripts tab. However, care should be used as data could be lost by such a forced shutdown.

Number of times to retry a busy file

This option allows you to retry the copy when a source file is open or busy. If you enter a retry count in this box, when a synchronization encounters an open source file it will wait the time specified and then attempt to copy the file. It will continue this pattern until the retry count is exhausted. If all the retries have been attempted and the file is still busy, then SureSync will log an error and move on to the next file. You can enter a time between retries by manually typing a time in the form hh:mm:ss or use the scroll bar to cycle through times.
